As I sit down to type my first blog entry, a few familiar phrases are echoing in my mind:
“To boldly go where no one has gone before.” – Star Trek
“May the force be with you.” – Star Wars
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.” Fortune cookie message taped to my laptop.
April is the month for season openers – the “official” baseball season opener is today with the Red Sox playing in Texas; and the “official” home opener at Fenway is April 11 (against Toronto). And, today is the season opener of Your Child’s Health Blog…except our season never ends.
I feel like the rookie on the Blog Team…and can’t wait to have my next turn at bat! You get a turn, too. That’s the great thing about blogs – I post the comments, musings, ideas and you share with our entire blog community your perceptions, spam-free of course.
As the Chief Editor of an online monthly parenting and child health web site, www.pediatricsnow.com, Your Child’s Health Blog is really a way for me to offer you a daily edition, which is why I’m thrilled to be partnering with Parents and Kids on this blog. I have a long association with Parents and Kids as a columnist. In fact, Heather Kempskie, the Parents and Kids Editor, actually helped me break into the column world while back in 2002 when we were both at North Shore Medical Center. Our first collaboration together yielded my first major column, a weekly column at Salem News.
Heather and I both struggled with how to keep our readers up to date between editions, a daunting task for a monthly publication, whether online or in print. What is very cool to me is that Your Child’s Health Blog seemed to develop on its own…we had the seems in place already with my monthly column and our collective desires to be able to bring you more timely information provided the fertilizer. (I have spring on my mind – you’ll have to excuse my sudden break into analogies….)
In fact, the first blossoms for the blog emerged last month when I sent a letter to the editor in Cookie Magazine about a misleading comment about soy milk. While helping me fine-tune my comments, we had a collective Aha! Wouldn’t it be great to have a place to just share these comments with all our readers??!! Thus were the early days of Your Child’s Health Blog.
The world of blogging is unchartered territory to me – and taps into my Star Trek lore. So, borrowing from one of the best series ever made for just shire fun, our quest is to “boldly go where no one has gone before”…or do I have that confused with our daily mission as parents? It all leads to the same place in the end…a little more information and a great deal more sanity and security as we raise our kids and try to remember we are all playing on the same team.
