Campaign Trail Survey Sparks New YWCA Campaign For Young Women

Just before Thanksgiving, the YWCA released a survey that revealed that Generation Y women, ages 18-29, feel our country has more work to do in the areas of civil rights and racial justice and want to see our new administration make these important issues “top priorities”. Other areas Generation Y wants Obama and his team to focus on include the economic crisis, health care, the housing crisis and HIV/AIDS.

The survey results were used by the YWCA to launch their new Own IT campaign. OWN IT is aimed at helping Generation Y women become more aware of these important issues and become empowered to make changes in their own lives and the country. As it was explained to me, “motivated by women who wouldn’t take no for an answer, OWN IT will engage younger women on the important issues we face today – such as racial justice, self-image, equal pay, quality child care, women’s health, and violence – and move them to collective action. Throughout the campaign, the YWCA will ignite a new generation to get involved in these issues, the YWCA and “own” their power.”

Check out the launch video that was released on YouTube:

Generation Y is our next generation of moms and dad. They are our next generation of leaders, teachers, CEOs, community workers, politicians, doctors, lawyers, nurses. Someone in Generation Y will be our future President. This survey isn’t just about their future – it’s about our future and our grandchildren’s future. Their issues are our issues, too. Take a moment to read the survey and really reflect on what it says. For all the progress we think we have made, after reading the results of the YWCA’s survey, you may have your eyes wide open in new ways.
