Looking for a quick way to “clean up” your kids’ diet without making them think that they’re “dieting”, and getting them healthier in the process? Try substituting whole fruits for fruit juices. Many fruit juices are loaded with high-fructose corn syrup, and some of the nutrients are actually removed to make room for the sugar! One of the first things I do when I’m trying to get clients leaner and healthier is encourage them to drop liquid calories and focus more on whole foods.
With whole foods, you get more nutrients – and in the context of fruits, we’re talking about a good dose of fiber. This added fiber (that isn’t present with fruit juices) will satisfy your child more, so he or she will be less likely to overeat on unhealthier foods. And, just as importantly, your child won’t perceive that the meal is any smaller; the size of an orange and a glass of ice water is actually bigger than just having a glass of orange juice – and more healthy when you consider that most kids will want cookies with their OJ.
Dropping liquid calories works like a charm with adults – and the same holds true for kids, so give it a shot!
