Tapping Into Low Tech Living In A High Tech World
0One of the perks I love of the holiday season is the way it pulls us away from technology and towards the world of true social connections.

You may have heard about the Harrisburg University of Science and Technology’s social media blackout recently. It ended only a few days ago so we don’t yet have the full analysis of what the school learned from it’s experiment in unplugging. What we do know loud and clear is that the concept of unplugging creates every type of response from acceptance to defensiveness.
This week is Turn Off Week…formerly known as “TV Turn Off Week”. Can you turn off your family’s screens?
Last week, we cruised to Bermuda. What a fabulous family vacation given our teenager kids. In addition to the beauty of the Atlantic and Bermuda, and the wonderful perks that cruising itself offers….
You wouldn’t believe how refreshing it has been to be offline for an entire week…actually a week and a tad more if the truth be known!
You should try it!!
How many screens are you plugged into each day? I added up my screen use recently and was up to 4 by 10am: my iPhone, TV for the morning news, my laptop and a satellite computer monitor plugged into my laptop.
I recent had 2 weeks nearly unplugged, including some unplugged time with my kids – and survived! Tune into to hear about my ups, downs and lessons learned.
Living unplugged. Pre-broadband I used to do it all the time. In fact, it’s how we all lived. Post-broadband, it’s been exceptionally rare. Post-cell phone, iPhone especially, no way! For the better part of the past 2 weeks, though, that’s exactly what I’ve managed to do…and it’s been wonderful!
Turn Off Week always falls during Spring Vacation. Tune in as I talk about ways to deconnect, stay sane, and why the timing is perfect for your family!
Turn Off Week (formerly TV Turn Off Week) always seems to fall during April Vacation! On the one hand, that’s brilliant timing. With most families of kids in front of screens on the go, you can’t hand pick a better time to ask people to avoid screens for an entire week. On the other hand, with screens so ubiquitous, even avoiding them on vacation is easier said than done, as we discovered last year in New York City.
