Book Review:

How Do Dinosaurs Clean Their Rooms?

By Jane Yolen and Mark Teague

how do dinosaurs say goodnight by jane yolen and mark teagueThis is a charming book that will delight you and your children! The book's themes and images span many stages of kids from the young toddler to the early reader. The book comes in both board style and regular page style and is one of the most cleaver children's books I have seen in a long while.

Young readers and prereaders will delight in the colorful pictures and the early chaos of the dinos. The older readers will enjoy the simple wording and will be able to make a simple connection between the dinos and themselves. The book replaces children with dinosaurs but still includes human parents.

The book is simply laid out and easy to follow. The story starts: How does a dinosaur clean up his room? With a big bucket loader, or shovel, or broom? Then, a few pages in we read: No, a dinosaur doesn’t. He does all his chores. He picks up his toys, and he puts them in rows,…. And, the book ends with a proud happy looking dino with a mama applauding in the corner.

How can you use this book with your kids? There are endless ways to enhance the intent of this book. One of the most cleaver aspects of the book is the inclusion of different dinosaur pictures on each page. And, hidden somewhere on the page is the name of that particular dino. Kids will not only learn to associate the names with the actual dino pictures but you can use the book to point out difference among the dinos. For example you might ask: where’s the dino with the long neck? Can you find Mama the dino with the wings? What was that called again? For older kids, you can ask them to find a particular dinosaur. Where's the T-rex? What's he doing on that page? The book is splashed with many colors and shapes that you can use to reinforce color and shape identification with your child. You can also use it as a counting book. How many trains are on this page?

As your child goes about his or her chores every day, you can refer to the book to help your child make a real connection to every day living. "You know, what did the dinosaur do when he had to put away his toys?" or "Are you a dinosaur or a cute little girl?"

This is a book that will surely provide you and your kids with endless hours of fun. To be honest, I was surprised I liked this book so much. There are many books on the market about cleaning your room but few capture the message so cleaverly and succinctly and cross so many developmental stages.

My final 2cents:  thumbs up
