Book Review:

Dog Breath By Dav Pilkey

dogbreathbydavpilkey

How do you teach your kids about some of life’s less pleasant issues, like having bad breath? How about a cleaver story with a cute dog at the center instead of themselves?

This is a cleaver book that will delight you and your child. Just check out the subtitle: the Horrible Trouble with Hally Tosis. (Get it? Halitosis is the medical term for bad breath!)

The book uses cleaver pictures to make the point. Every where Hally goes, the stench of his breath causes issues. On one page we see a gold fish floating upside down. In another, Mona Lisa holding her nose. One page shows a tree wilting. And, every where relatives and neighbors are seen plugging their noses.

The story has another cleaver twist - the kids try to cure Hally by "taking his breath away" but it never occurs to them to use toothpaste! The kids try every thing from amazing vistas to exciting events. But, would you believe, in the end, it is Hally's bad odor that saves the day??

That makes this book extra poignant for kids because it reinforces that even less desirable attributes can come in handy. Although, I can't imagine any child who would want their gold fish to go belly up due to their mouth issues!

My Final 2cents:  thumbs up
