New Year, New Directions

Happy New Year!

The Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

It wouldn’t be a new year without a new adventure, or a new path…would it? Even our kids start off each new year with something “new”. Perhaps they are starting a new school or a new phase in their lives. For us, as adults, we often dust off old resolutions and hobbies. Perhaps you’re also starting a true new path with a career tweak. If you are, you are in good company. I know many, including me, who are taking that journey, too.

My career tweak has been evolving for about a decade – since I delved into the world of technology and kids. I realized as the world of digital health evolved that I was in the right field but wearing the “wrong hat”. My true calling was in law – in helping with policy development and in helping kids and families negotiate the maze of issues that come with our evolving high tech world such as cyberbullying and sexting. Yes, they are health issues, but the true issues are legal and to truly help kids and families a law degree is what I need at this stage in the game. So, just about a year ago, I applied to law school and was accepted at the Massachusetts School of Law. I started in August and have one semester under my belt with 5 to go.

To borrow from Robert Frost, taking this path “has made all the difference”. While I don’t entirely know which field of law I’ll pursue, I know beyond a reasonable doubt that this is the path I’m meant travel upon. So, stay tuned. I’ll keep you posted as I traverse this new path.

Until then, check back from time to time as my posts molt from the health and digital you are familiar with to health, digital and law.

Here’s to a healthy and productive 2015
